Thoughts of Tuesday - A Poem

" Jeke is so unique
In fact, she's quite chic!
She works so hard
So studious, she never uses her credit card!
Sad day for Jeke
Who reeks of too many leadership test questions
Please just let her speak!
When she eats,
Jeke's best ideas begin to leak!
Go Jeke! Go Jeke!
I believe you will succeed. "

Movie Mondays - Gladiator

This week's movie is Gladiator (2000) starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. Jaclyn has seen this movie, but Alisha has not, so we are going to highlight it as a preview for her. The inspiration for this came from our World Civ class, as we are currently discussion the ancient Roman Empire.
Tagline according to IMDB:

A general who became a slave. A slave who became a gladiator. A gladiator who defied an emperor.

We know it's an epic movie, but let's take a look at what others have to say:
wishkah6 (IMDB user) declares, "Very rarely a film meshes together as finely as Gladiator. Its vivid action, superb writing, breathtaking acting, moving cinematography, and flawless score all amalgamate into a zenith of film making."
Wow. I think I would agree. The storyline is intriguing throughout and left me with the impression of wanting to be male? I know weird, but this movie is all about man-power. Awesome.

Rotten Tomatoes gave Gladiator a Fresh review at 77% positive!
Mark Halverson, of the Sacramento News & Review, says, "Scott triumphantly transports us back to the Roman Empire circa 180 A.D. with a painter’s eye for detail, a proven talent for manufacturing exotic realities ... and a sweet tooth for utter spectacle."

Urban Cinefile Critics announce, "Epic cinema is back."
But not all critics were entirely wowed. A few, while giving it a positive rating, still had some negative comments about the movie.
Jules Brenner, of Cinema Signals, said, "There's careful thought evident in suggesting what can only be conjectured. If you're going to enjoy this entertainment, don't be overly preoccupied with historical accuracy."

Christopher Smith, of the Bangor Daily News, says, "Beefcake! Blood! Body slams! Boring! Boring? Well, not quite, but at 150 minutes, Gladiator isn't entirely the thrilling, action-packed Roman epic some fans of the genre were expecting."
So not everyone had the same experience with Gladiator. But overall good story, interesting characters, and battles that may be a bit graphic for any audience. We'll see what Alisha thinks after she watches it.

Sights and Sounds of Saturday - We're playing Ba-sket-ball

This Saturday, Jaclyn's family was visiting and made a trip across the highway to Upland, IN, to see the men's basketball team play Taylor. It was their last regular season game, and was sure to be interesting since it was a rivalry game. The score was fairly close the whole time, but the men showed the Trojans who was boss... winning the game 65-63! This made them the MCC Champs!

The Taylor student fans were not very sportsmanlike, however, which dampened the trip just a little bit. They yelled at the refs after every call, they chanted during free throws, and they made fun of IWU school spirit (cheerleaders). Overall, they did not represent their school well, as far as I am concerned.

Fabulous Fridays - F.U.N.

F is for ...
Family: Jaclyn's family came to visit today! Great fun :) They came for a few days to see the IWU/Taylor basketball games this weekend. While they were here, they also took Jaclyn to Meijer for some groceries, ate at Baldwin (their favorite college cafeteria), and saw FNL ...
FNL: Friday Night Live is a play off NBC's long running sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live. Students from IWU write and perform various comedic sketches for a live audience two nights in a row once a semester. This years FNL started with Pirates and our favorite News segment. There were some sketches we couldn't quite understand ... one was a song about Bowman and the other was a sketch about caterpillars from France and Scotland? The best sketch of the night involved our favorite Winnie the Pooh and their real adventures in the Hundred Acre Woods ... emphasizing Pooh's honey addiction!
Friends: Alisha spent part of the evening celebrating her friend Amanda's birthday, before joining the rest of the gang at FNL. Aubrey and Matt joined Jaclyn and her Family, to play games such as Disney Princess UNO and Monopoly Deal.

U is for ...
Uncomfortable: Sitting on the floor for 2 hours before FNL was not a very comforting experience. It paid off in the end though because we got seats near the front!
Unique: Jaclyn did not work on the show Crossroads this week on account of her family being in town. Alisha kept her posted to the goings on at the TV Station while she was missing.
N is for ...
Nick Pitera: Alisha's new YouTube singer obsession! His vocal range is fantastic and he can sing both the alto an soprano parts of a song. You should look him up. Our favorite song is A Whole New World.
Nothing else: Mostly we thought of words the started with F on this Friday in history. But since "F Words" probably was not a good title or theme for our post, the other letters of the word FUN started to be spelled out. However, most of the excited parts of Friday were all the Fantastic things that start with F ... Family, Friends, and FNL!

Ticked Thursday - Are you Listening?

Have you ever given a presentation when the people in the entire class are CLEARLY uninterested in what you are having to say? Sad day for Jeke, cause this happened to her today...but I also understand this feeling. Yes, sometimes classes can be unbearable early in the morning, but basic listening skills can still be implemented! There's nothing that can distract my presentation skills more than when I see my fellow student audience eyes fluttering open/shut/open/shut...PICK ONE! Either close the eyes or keep them open without the glazing look of death. This is a touchy subject, and I'm sure more than just Jeke and I have been in this position.

Take professors for example. They have to deal with this annoyance everyday! Obviously the more you present, the more you get used to it. But it isn't something anyone should have to get used to! Can we be better listeners? Can we act like we care a little bit? Be a little polite and a little respectful. When someone is talking, whether it's in conversation or formal presentation, it's our responsibility as the audience to listen. If you don't care, fake it ... just for a little bit. Be respectful. If you were presenting or talking, wouldn't you want people to listen??

Common courtesy people. Let's treat each other with respect please.

Movie Monday - The Time Travelers Wife

So this is a movie that we haven't seen.
Summary according to IMDB:
A romantic drama about a Chicago librarian with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage.
We have no idea if it's any good. But let's see what the critics said...
- audiojoe99 (IMDB user) says, "For everyone who's going in expecting the book, lower your expectations. It isn't the book. What it is, is a condensed version of the main love story from the book, played out perfectly with respect for the text."
I did not read the book, so I have no expectations. My (Jaclyn) friend Kate read the book and loved it, so if audiojoe99 says it captures the essence of the book, that sounds good to me.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 37% ... not a great score. But I've noticed that they usually don't like "chick flicks" or girly movies. I understand why, they all follow the same formula, but I enjoy them, so I usually disagree.

Mike McGranaghan from Aisle Seat was not really a fan. He said, "You can constantly feel The Time Traveler's Wife reaching for emotional depth, yet it never gets there."

Leigh Paatsch from the Herald Sun (Australia) says, "Bana and McAdams do share a pleasant chemistry, but can never quite trump the dull and earnest nature of the material they are working with here."
But it's not all bad. Some reviewers did give good reviews.

Sonny Bunch from the Washington Times declares, "The Time Traveler's Wife is an effective romance film for the ladies with a patina of science fiction to woo their boyfriends into joining."

Des Partridge from Courier Mail (Australia) says, "This is undoubtedly Bana's best American performance and you can genuinely believe in Bana and McAdams as lovers who give the story its emotion."
One concern is that people who haven't read the book won't follow the whole story. So I guess it's up to your judgement. Alisha and I are pretty with it people ... so we will watch it, and let you know what happens!!

Sights and Sounds of Saturday - Marion, Indy, Chi-town

Jaclyn:
I did not discover a new sight today, but rediscovered a forgotten favorite. Culver's! Mmmm! I got a sundae with Andes and brownie pieces and vanilla custard. If you've ever thought about what a cloud would taste like ... vanilla custard is it. Yes. I think if clouds were made of vanilla custard the sky would be my favorite place to be. Another thing I forgot about Culver's was the flavor of the day. I picked up a list with all the flavor's for February, and I'm thinking I'll be visiting there a whole lot in the next few weeks! Some flavors coming up soon ... Mocha Chip, Caramel Apple Cobbler, and Coconut Cream Pie! So let me know if you want to make the journey to Culver's sometime soon and share in this delightful treat ... I know I would enjoy it.

Another eventful trip happened this weekend ... I took a trip to Indianapolis with Matt, and we went to the Castleton Square Mall. Very nice mall; only one level so it's kind of sprawling, but there are no stairs; well laid out, similar stores are near each other, making it feel niche oriented. They have a lot of different stores and a lot of variety. After the mall, we made our way down the street to the Cheesecake Factory. The line was really long, but I figured maybe 30 minutes wait. I was very wrong. The wait was 1.5-2 hours. We heard that and turned around and left. Not worth the wait, we were really hungry at that point. So we drove across the parking lot and tried our luck at TGI Fridays. The wait there was 30-45 minutes, and we didn't even have to wait that long ... maybe a 30 minute wait. But it was worth it! The food was great!

Alisha:
Riding along in the most fashionable IWU mini van, myself and 11 others arrived in Chicago. Fortunately it wasn't windy, cause that would just throw off the entire style of the day! We had concrete plans...which was so nice...cause don't even get me started with going into a city where you and your group can do SO much...and end up doing nothing because not everyone "agrees." ugh so annoying...anyways, thankfully we had structure and had two glorious hours to shop, go to a play, and eat adventurously at an Irish Pub.

The shopping was epic, that's the only way to explain a seven story mall...and the play "Master Harold and the Boys" was a very enjoyable experience. Throughout the first hour, I was wondering what the point was in the play, and then the final half hour...it all "hit the fan" so to speak...and we all left the theatre in a awed state. It was truly fantastic!

Then, the Irish Pub...I do encourage anyone who is in the windy city to go and visit an Irish Pub because people are very nice and the bathrooms are amazing! Seriously! The sinks were like something I'd never seen before...it was a combination of an antique water pump with a contemporary waterfall...in other words, just go see it yourself.

Chicago was a perfect touch this weekend...and full of sights 'n sounds for an adventurous Saturday!

fabulous wealth, tremendous, stupendous, prodigious, phenomenal, remarkable, exceptional, astounding amazing, fantastic, breathtaking, staggering, unthinkable, unimaginable, incredible, unbelievable, unheard of, untold, undreamed of, beyond one's wildest dreams, mind-boggling, mind-blowing, jaw-dropping...

No homework the next day, no work, no obligations...it's a day when you can try something new...shoot go out of your way to make plans...for goodness sakes you can go to Kokomo if you so desire! Friday is a day that pauses...time takes a break for relaxation and a window of opportunity for
procrastination to settle...aww the joys of my favorite day...yes...no other way to communicate this except to say thank goodness today is FABULOUS FRIDAY!!!

Ticked Thursday - Sarcasm and Gas Stations

To kick off Ticked Thursdays, gas stations and sarcasm have been an issue lately. Disclaimer--this post may include some sarcasm, so we'll address that first.

Sarcasm (as defined by Merriam-Webster)

Main Entry: sar·casm
Pronunciation: \ˈsär-ˌka-zəm\
Function: noun
Etymology: French or Late Latin; French sarcasme, from Late Latin sarcasmos, from Greeksarkasmos, from sarkazein to tear flesh, bite the lips in rage, sneer, from sark-, sarx flesh; probably akin to Avestan thwarəs- to cut
Date: 1550

1 : a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain 2 a : a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual b : the use or language of sarcasm

The bolded words highlight the problem with sarcasm: it's flesh tearing and painful. It is not as funny as you may think. When used tastefully it can be witty, but like the definition says, mostly it's hurtful and mean to an individual. There is a line and people tend to forget that it's there. People think they're being funny, but if no one laughs ... the comment probably was NOT humorous to everyone else. Especially if someone is having a stressful day ... sarcasm is not the way to communicate that you care. Sarcasm should lead to laughter, not more stress and frustration.

Sarcasm tends to be funnier if it's directed at an idea instead of a specific person.

Example:

Jaclyn: "Alisha, what's the weather like outside? Still snowing?"

Alisha: "Oh no... it's warm of course, remember global warming is happening!"

See how that worked? Alisha made fun of global warming, and didn't make fun of Jaclyn's lack of knowledge regarding the weather! That's funny.

Secondly, gas stations. What purpose do they serve? Easy ... they are a station to put gas in your car. What happens when gas stations don't have gas? They become useless stations.
